20 Britons Evacuated After Hantavirus Scare on Cruise Ship

Twenty British nationals evacuated from a cruise ship linked to a suspected hantavirus outbreak were among those transported on a special flight coordinated by authorities. The evacuation operation was carried out as a precautionary measure following growing health concerns on board.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the situation is being closely monitored, but officials insist the risk to the general public remains “very low.” Medical teams have already begun assessing passengers and crew members who may have been exposed to the virus.

Hantavirus is a rare but potentially serious illness usually spread through contact with infected rodents or their droppings. Symptoms can include fever, fatigue, muscle aches and breathing difficulties in severe cases. Health authorities are continuing investigations to determine the extent of exposure among passengers.

The evacuation flight was conducted under strict safety protocols, with passengers receiving medical guidance upon arrival. Officials stressed that there is currently no evidence of widespread transmission and urged the public not to panic.

The incident has nevertheless raised concerns about health safety measures aboard international cruise liners, with experts calling for tighter monitoring and rapid-response systems for infectious disease outbreaks at sea.
