FIFA Plans Yellow Card Reset to Protect Key World Cup Clashes

FIFA is preparing to introduce a major change to its disciplinary rules ahead of the 2026 World Cup, with plans to clear players’ yellow cards at key stages of the tournament.

The proposed system will see all yellow cards wiped after the group stage and again following the quarter-finals. This means players will enter both the knockout phase and the semi-finals without the risk of suspension from earlier bookings.

The idea behind the change is straightforward: reduce the chances of top players missing decisive matches due to accumulated cautions. In past tournaments, several high-profile players have been ruled out of crucial knockout games after picking up multiple yellow cards, often for relatively minor fouls.

With the 2026 tournament expanding to 48 teams and featuring more matches, the likelihood of suspensions through accumulation has increased. FIFA believes the adjustment will help maintain the quality of the competition by ensuring the best players are available when it matters most.

Importantly, the rule will not affect red cards. Players sent off will still face suspensions, preserving discipline and accountability on the pitch.
