The Ghana Education Service (GES) has closed its recruitment application portal following an overwhelming response from job seekers across the country.
According to the service, more than 40,000 applications were submitted for just 7,000 available teaching positions. The huge turnout reflects the intense competition for employment in Ghana’s public sector, particularly within the education space.
The recruitment exercise, which targeted trained teachers, drew interest from thousands of qualified graduates eager to secure placement in schools nationwide. However, the limited number of vacancies means that only a small fraction of applicants will ultimately be selected.
GES officials indicated that the closure of the portal was necessary to begin the screening and selection process. They also assured applicants that the process would be conducted fairly and based on merit.
The development highlights the persistent issue of graduate unemployment in Ghana, especially among trained teachers who often wait years for posting opportunities. It also brings renewed attention to the need for increased investment in the education sector to create more employment avenues.
Successful candidates are expected to be contacted after the review process, while others may have to wait for future recruitment windows.
