African Football Chief to ‘Respect’ CAS Decision on AFCON Final Row

Amidst turbulent times in African football, Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has declared his intent to respect the decision made by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding Senegal's appeal against being stripped of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title. "I will respect and implement the CAS decision. My personal opinion regarding the matter is irrelevant," Motsepe stated to reporters in Cairo on Sunday.

The Controversial AFCON Final.

The controversy stems from the CAF appeals body's decision to overturn Senegal’s 1-0 victory over hosts Morocco in the AFCON final held last month. The match descended into chaos when many Senegalese players, along with head coach Pape Thiaw and his staff, walked off the pitch in Rabat following a contentious added-time penalty awarded to Morocco.

After returning to the field, Morocco’s Brahim Diaz missed the penalty, and Senegal's Pape Gueye scored during extra time, securing the win. Despite this, a CAF disciplinary committee fined participants from both teams but initially did not change the match result. Morocco later appealed and were awarded a 3-0 victory by the appeal board, which Motsepe emphasized consists of independent judges and lawyers.

Senegal’s Response.

In defiance of the appeal board’s decision, Senegal showcased the Cup of Nations trophy during their World Cup warm-up match against Peru in Paris on Saturday. The Senegalese team proudly donned shirts featuring two stars, symbolizing their first Cup of Nations victory in 2022 and their disputed triumph in February 2023.

Motsepe announced plans to visit both Senegal and Morocco, though he did not specify dates. His aim is to emphasize the importance of collaboration in advancing African football. Additionally, he mentioned that CAF would be implementing changes and improvements to its statutes and regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
