Prempeh College has formally demanded the payment of over GH¢1 million from the Government of Ghana as compensation for land used in the construction of the Sofoline Interchange project.
The long-standing issue came up during proceedings of the Public Accounts Committee, where school authorities indicated that the land was acquired in 2013 with a promise of compensation that has yet to be fulfilled.
According to representatives of the school, the delay in payment has persisted for more than a decade despite several attempts to engage the relevant government agencies. They argue that the unpaid compensation has affected planned infrastructure and development projects within the school.
The Committee, after hearing the concerns, directed that the matter be escalated to the Ashanti Regional Minister for urgent attention. Officials are expected to work with the appropriate state institutions to verify the claim and ensure that the outstanding amount is settled.
Members of the Committee stressed the importance of honoring compensation obligations tied to public infrastructure projects, noting that delays of this nature can undermine trust between state institutions and affected entities.
The Sofoline Interchange remains a key road project in Kumasi, designed to ease traffic congestion, but the unresolved compensation claim highlights lingering concerns tied to its development.
