The rapid expansion of BRICS—now widely referred to as BRICS+—is redefining the contours of global geopolitics and economic influence as of early 2026. What began as a coalition of five major emerging economies has evolved into an eleven-member bloc with increasing weight in international affairs, signaling a decisive shift toward a more multipolar world order.

The original members—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—laid the foundation for cooperation among emerging markets seeking greater representation in global institutions. However, the group’s transformation accelerated following its 2024 expansion, which brought in Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. This momentum continued into early 2025 with the formal admission of Indonesia, one of Southeast Asia’s largest economies.

With its expanded membership, BRICS+ now spans multiple continents and represents a significant share of the world’s population, energy resources, and economic output. The inclusion of major oil producers like Iran and the United Arab Emirates has strengthened the bloc’s influence over global energy markets, while countries such as Indonesia and Ethiopia contribute to its demographic and economic diversity.

This enlargement is more than symbolic. It reflects a broader push by emerging economies to challenge the dominance of traditional Western-led institutions such as the IMF and World Bank. BRICS+ nations have increasingly advocated for alternative financial systems, expanded use of local currencies in trade, and the strengthening of institutions like the New Development Bank.

Geopolitically, the bloc’s expansion underscores growing dissatisfaction with the existing global order. Member states often share a desire for greater strategic autonomy and a rebalancing of international power structures. While internal differences remain—ranging from political systems to regional interests—the collective ambition to amplify the voice of the Global South has become a unifying theme.

As BRICS+ continues to evolve, its impact is being closely watched. Whether it can translate its expanded membership into cohesive policy action remains an open question. Yet one thing is clear: the bloc is no longer a peripheral alliance but a central player in shaping the future of global governance.
