Nigerien customs intercepted more than 70 kilograms of gold. The bars were heading to the UAE.

This is not an isolated incident. It is a pattern that has been documented for years.

The United Arab Emirates is the primary destination for smuggled African gold.

A 2024 SwissAid report found that 96% of artisanal gold transiting through Benin and Niger ended up in the UAE. For Togo, the figure was 100%. In 2022 alone, the UAE imported 405 tons more gold from Africa than the continent officially exported. That is the gap between what leaves and what is declared.

The UAE is not just a buyer.

It is the laundering hub. Gold arrives from conflict zones and smuggling routes, gets melted down in Dubai refineries, and is recast as a legitimate product. The origin is erased.

The gold enters the global supply chain with clean papers.

UAE customs even exempt gold brought in hand luggage from declaration requirements, making it nearly impossible to track.

Niger is not a bystander.

In 2024, 1,400 kilograms of gold was seized at Addis Ababa airport, coming from Niger and heading to Dubai without official documents.

General Tiani responded by freezing all mining licenses while investigations proceeded.

The value of the intercepted gold exceeded 60 billion CFA francs.

Nigerien officials found that 82 airport employees had been bypassed.

The gold passed through Niamey airport undetected.

The scale of the theft is staggering. Niger officially exported 235 kilograms of gold in 2022, worth about €10 million.

The UAE imported €457 million worth of gold from Niger that same year. The difference is smuggling .

Orano, the French nuclear company, is not the only extractor. Gold is being pulled from Nigerien soil, moved through porous borders, and flown to Dubai where it is cleaned and sold.

The state that just nationalized its uranium and declared sovereignty over its resources is losing its gold through the same backdoor.

The 70 kilograms intercepted is a victory. But it is a fraction of what leaves every week.

Pinable Engagement Comment

Nigerien customs seized 70kg of gold heading to the UAE. In 2022, the UAE imported €457 million in gold from Niger while Niger officially exported only €10 million worth. Where does the rest go? Dubai's refineries, where the origin is erased.
