Kaduna State is sitting on platinum lithium gold nickel copper and rare earth elements.
Nigeria's Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, announced a major discovery this week. A polymetallic mineral province in Kaduna State containing platinum group metals, gold, nickel, copper, lithium and rare earth elements, verified by the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency.
The find was made by a private mining company working alongside the agency, and Alake called it one of the most significant breakthroughs in Nigeria's mining sector in recent years.
This is not a small story. These are the exact minerals powering global demand for batteries, clean energy technology and advanced manufacturing.
The same minerals other countries are racing to secure, Nigeria has confirmed sitting in its own soil.
The reforms behind this matter just as much as the discovery. The government has revoked more than 3000 inactive mining titles to clear out speculators sitting on licenses they never developed. New mining lease applicants are now required to submit local processing plans instead of shipping raw minerals out untouched. Mining revenue has grown from around 6 billion naira before these reforms to over 70 billion naira by the end of 2025.
Nigeria has always been treated as an oil story first.
This discovery says there is a lot more underground than the world has been paying attention to.
Who actually benefits when a discovery like this gets developed, the country or the investors writing the checks.
