Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed reports suggesting that any political group was denied access to the Eagle Square, describing such claims as unfounded and misleading.
Speaking during an inspection tour of ongoing infrastructure projects in Abuja on Monday, Wike clarified that no formal request had been made by any faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to use the facility. According to him, the allegations are part of a recurring pattern aimed at attracting public sympathy.
“Who denied them? I am not aware of any such development,” Wike said. “If it is the ADC, such claims are their usual attempt to gain public sympathy.”
The minister explained that access to the Eagle Square is governed by a clear administrative process, which includes submitting a formal application through the Abuja Investments Company Limited and fulfilling all necessary financial obligations.
He further emphasized that no political party is discriminated against, citing instances where both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) followed due procedure to secure venues for their events.
Wike also addressed confusion regarding the use of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome, noting that the facility is not under the jurisdiction of the FCT Administration but rather managed by the Sports Commission.
Beyond the controversy, the minister expressed satisfaction with the progress of key infrastructure projects across Abuja. He revealed that major roadworks are on track for completion by May 15, with streetlight installations expected to be finalized before the end of the month.
At Gaduwa, Wike said measures have been put in place to prevent encroachment on road corridors, including the installation of protective mesh. Meanwhile, in Wassa, plans are underway to relocate traders from the Apo Mechanic Village to a newly developed site with improved facilities.
Addressing concerns over the Kugbo Bus Terminal, Wike downplayed reports of structural damage following a recent windstorm. He clarified that the incident only affected parts of the roofing, which are currently being repaired, and confirmed that no casualties were recorded.
He concluded by attributing the steady pace of development in the FCT to strong collaboration between the government and contractors, backed by timely payments and effective supervision.
