A devastating thunderstorm in the Northern region has reportedly killed more than 20 cattle belonging to a Fulani herdsman at Tatale, leaving the livestock owner in deep distress.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred on Monday evening, during a heavy rainfall accompanied by intense lightning and thunder. The cattle owner, identified as Sarkin Amaru, said he was sheltering in his hut when a loud thunderclap struck moments before the animals began collapsing.
Narrating the heartbreaking experience, Mr. Amaru explained that he initially rushed outside after noticing one cow had fallen, hoping to save it.
However, he quickly realized that several other cattle had also been struck down by the lightning.
“In all, more than 20 cattle died instantly,” he reportedly said, describing the incident as one of the biggest losses he has suffered in recent years.
The deceased animals were said to be the herdsman’s primary source of livelihood and support for his family. The incident has therefore left him financially stranded and uncertain about how to recover from the heavy loss.
Following the incident, residents who visited the scene expressed shock over the scale of destruction caused by the lightning strike. Some community members described the event as unfortunate, especially at a time many livestock farmers are already struggling with the rising cost of feeding and maintaining animals.
Meanwhile, the Animal Health Assistant Officer for the Tatale-Sanguli District, Yakubu Yussif, has reportedly warned residents not to consume meat from the dead cattle, explaining that animals killed by lightning could pose serious health risks.
Mr. Amaru is now appealing to the government, the district assembly, organizations, and individuals to support him as he tries to rebuild his livelihood after the disaster.
