Iran Parliament Speaker Accuses Trump of Spreading Falsehoods Over Strait of Hormuz.

The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has accused US President Donald Trump of disseminating false information about the status of the Strait of Hormuz. According to Ghalibaf, Trump's statements are aimed at gaining leverage in negotiations, but he warns that the strategic waterway cannot be considered "fully open" as long as the American blockade continues.

Claims of Misinformation.

Ghalibaf asserted that Trump made "seven statements in one hour," all of which he claimed were untrue. The Iranian official emphasized that as long as the US naval blockade remains, vessels will need to follow specific routes and seek permission from Tehran to pass through the Strait. He stated, "With these lies, they did not win the war and will certainly achieve nothing in negotiations.

International Response and Developments.

In response to the tensions, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced a joint plan developed by the UK, France, and other international partners to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait. Speaking in Paris alongside leaders from France, Germany, and Italy, Starmer confirmed that over ten countries are prepared to contribute resources to a multinational defense mission. Starmer emphasized the need for a lasting solution, writing on X: "It’s good news that the Strait of Hormuz has now reopened. This must be a long-lasting and workable solution, without tolls or restrictions on routes."

Upcoming Military Planning Conference.

To finalize the details of this mission, a military planning conference is scheduled to take place in London next week. The conference aims to address the recent period of intense volatility in the region. On April 17, Trump claimed on Truth Social that the Strait was "fully open" following an announcement from Tehran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had previously stated that the passage for commercial vessels was "completely open" during a temporary ceasefire linked to the Israel-Lebanon conflict.

Ongoing Restrictions and Complexities.

Despite the reopening for global shipping, Trump clarified that a specific US naval blockade remains in effect, targeting vessels linked to Iran until a broader agreement with Tehran is reached. This suggests that while commercial traffic may pass, ships leaving or heading to Iran face restrictions. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global energy route, and its recent disruptions have contributed to volatility in energy markets. The upcoming London conference will play a crucial role in determining whether a permanent ceasefire and stable navigation can be achieved, as no independent confirmation of a full reopening has yet been established.
