The ongoing conflict in South Sudan has reached a critical juncture, as opposition forces have successfully reclaimed the strategic town of Akobo from government troops. This development has prompted the United Nations Security Council to address the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the region.

Security Concerns and Human Rights Violations.

Anita Kiki Gbeho, Head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), highlighted the gravity of the situation. “The security situation remains deeply concerning,” she stated, noting a significant increase in violence. UNMISS human rights reports show a 40% increase in deaths and injuries in 2025 compared to the previous year.

The conflict reignited after the collapse of a 2018 peace deal about a year ago. Akobo, now under opposition control, is a critical location for the forces led by Riek Machar, South Sudan's detained vice president.

Humanitarian Challenges and UNMISS Base Closure.

The humanitarian landscape in South Sudan is grim, compounded by a reduction in international aid budgets. This financial strain has led to the impending closure of the essential UNMISS base in Akobo. Gbeho emphasized, “As the Security Council deliberates on the renewal of the UNMISS mandate, it is important to recognize the dilemma we collectively face.

Mass Displacement and Food Insecurity.

Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, addressed the dire situation via video call. He reported that a quarter of a million people have fled their homes since December, and 1.35 million individuals across Zhongli State are now without access to healthcare.

Fletcher also pointed to the alarming levels of food insecurity affecting various regions in South Sudan. “I therefore fear that my next briefing to you on South Sudan will speak of famine,” he warned. More than 7.5 million people are expected to require food assistance this year.

The Path Forward.

The Security Council faces pressing decisions regarding the renewal and scope of the UNMISS mandate. The international community is urged to recognize the urgency of the situation and provide the necessary support to alleviate the humanitarian crisis and stabilize the region. The future of South Sudan hangs in the balance, with millions of lives at stake.
