A growing number of Afro-Argentines are using social media to challenge one of the country’s most enduring myths, that Black people do not exist in Argentina. Through interviews, documentaries and viral videos, members of the Afro-Argentine community are sharing their stories and proudly embracing their identity.

Many say their ancestors arrived in Argentina centuries ago through the transatlantic slave trade, while others migrated from neighboring African-descendant communities across Latin America. Despite their long history, Afro-Argentines argue that they have been largely excluded from school curricula, official statistics and mainstream media, leading to the false belief that Argentina has no Black population.

One woman featured in a widely shared video declared, “We are Black Argentines, and we are proud of it,” a statement that has resonated with millions online.

Activists hope the growing attention will encourage greater recognition of Afro-Argentine history, culture and contributions to the country’s development while inspiring younger generations to embrace their heritage with pride.
