The World Health Organization has confirmed a new hantavirus outbreak after eight linked cases were identified, raising concerns among global health authorities over the spread of the rare but potentially deadly disease.
According to health officials, the infected individuals are connected through a common exposure source, although investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact origin of the outbreak. Contact tracing efforts have now been intensified in an attempt to contain further transmission and monitor anyone who may have been exposed.
Hantavirus is a rare virus usually spread through contact with infected rodents, particularly through their urine, droppings, or saliva. In severe cases, the illness can lead to dangerous breathing complications and organ failure if not treated quickly.
Early symptoms often resemble the flu, including fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, and chills. However, patients can rapidly develop shortness of breath as the infection progresses, making early medical attention critical.
Health authorities have urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, especially in areas where rodent exposure is common.
